On July 9th 2011 Activists managed to enter Israel as part of an attempt to bring hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters into the country. The protesters cut through Israel's West Bank separation barrier and set light to tyres and a nearby field. Michael Berg, an activist from the United States, said he flew in on July 8th but did not tell Israeli security he wanted to visit the West Bank, as activists were told to do. "It's very important that people did this and showed that the state of Israel does not allow people to go through their airports and openly travel into the West Bank, which is not just, considering that Israel's controls all the borders into the West Bank," he said. Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists had planned to arrive at Israel's Ben-Gurion International Airport over the weekend, beginning late on July 7th. But Israel prevented scores of activists from boarding Tel Aviv-bound flights in Europe on July 8th. Police also questioned dozens more upon arrival at the airport and denied entry to 69. Organisers insisted they were on a peaceful, week-long mission to express solidarity with the Palestinians and draw attention to life under Israeli occupation - including travel restrictions. They accused Israel of overreacting. **** On July 12th Palestinian and foreign protesters clashed with Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Hebron and the village of Beit Omar. The protest in Hebron was held to demand the departure of Jewish settlers from the city. Israeli troops used tear gas and stun grenades against the protesters. Israel captured Hebron when it seized the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan in the six-day war of 1967. More than 600 Jews live in fortified enclaves in Hebron amid 170-thousand Palestinians. Meanwhile Palestinian protesters and foreign activists clashed with the Israeli military on July 12th in the West Bank village of Beit Omar. Protesters holding Palestinian flags and signs were prevented by the Israeli military to march forward with their protest. Tear gas and stun grenades were used to disperse the protesters, and at least five were detained. The protest in Beit Omar is held weekly against a nearby Jewish settlement and Israel's separation barrier, which Palestinians say is a land grab and separates farmers from their land. **** On August 17th Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati officially opened the Palestinian Embassy in Beirut on. Abbas and Mikati also discussed plans to seek United Nations recognition of Palestine as an independent state. Lebanon, which is sympathetic to the Palestinian position, will chair the UN Security Council in September. Abbas is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 21st. On August 17th he said: "While we are lifting the Palestinian flag here in Lebanon, we will go together to the United Nations to get a full membership for a Palestinian state in this global forum." Israel opposes the UN recognition drive and insists, along with the US and many European countries, that the only way to set up a Palestinian state is through negotiations. **** On August 18th an Israeli airstrike has killed six people in Gaza, including a child, Palestinian medical officials said. The violence erupted on the afternoon of August 18th in response to a three-pronged attack on southern Israel by squads of gunmen operating out of the Sinai peninsula, near Israel's border with Egypt. At least eight Israelis were killed in the series of closely spaced attacks. The Israeli military said the attacks had been executed by a Hamas-linked group known as the Popular Resistance Committees, and that their objective had been to kidnap civilians or soldiers. **** **** **** You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/aaa928e16179f003a82ceafacb1e54b8 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Israeli forces have uprooted 47 Palestinian olive saplings in East Jerusalem al-Quds in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian sources say saplings which were planted in late March were chopped down and burned in Silwan neighborhood. They say the trees were to honor the 47 Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces in al-Quds since October. The agriculture industry, olive cultivation in particular, provides livelihood to about 80000 Palestinian families in the West Bank. Israeli forces and settlers regularly attack Palestinian villages and damage their property. Palestinians say Tel Aviv is seeking to drive them out in an attempt to Judaize the occupied West Bank.
