Since East Jerusalem fell under Israeli control in the Six Day War of 1967, a large number of Jewish neighbourhoods have also been settled. East Jerusalem is the location of the first campus of the Hebrew University [1] on Mt Scopus, Although the university area and the military base near it were always under Israeli control, even prior to 1967. Despite the high level of coexistence, the area remains a point of contention in Arab-Israeli relations, somewhat intensified since the outbreak of hostilities in the last few years. ...

According to the Jerusalem Post, the driver, a 30-year-old man, swerved his vehicle off the road and used it to strike the two officers, injuring them slightly. A third police officer responded, shooting the driver who died shortly afterward at the scene. The two injured officers were transferred to the Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus and the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, respectively, for treatment. The only information made public concerning the identity of the driver is that he resided in East Jerusalem. According to the Times of Israel, several A-Tur residents began throwing rocks at police and rescue services after the attack. The attack comes a week after three Israeli policemen were wounded by a driver who rammed his car into them outside the Alon Shvut settlement, Southwest of Jerusalem. Israel has seen an increase of vehicular and stabbing attacks in Jerusalem in the period since October 2014. The phenomenon has now spread to the West Bank and is raising worries of renewed wave of Palestinian violence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. Israeli forces removed metal detectors and barricades at the entrance to al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem, Monday. The move comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet approved the removal of such security measures and expressed the intention to replace them with advanced surveillance cameras during an Israeli cabinet meeting that convened for a second time during the night between Monday and Tuesday. Director of al-Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Najeh Bakirat protested that the cabinet's decision does not meet the Muslim community's demand to remove security measures as a whole. Israeli officials installed metal detectors and extra security cameras in the al-Aqsa compound on the Temple Mount after two Israeli police officers were shot dead at the site earlier this month in a gun-fight in which three Palestinian shooters were also killed. The security measures have led to further clashes, resulting in the deaths of three Palestinians during confrontations with Israeli security forces on Friday, and other outbreaks of violence in and around East Jerusalem over the weekend. The body of AP video journalist Simone Camilli was transferred from St Joseph's hospital in east Jerusalem to Ben Gurion airport on Thursday to be flown back to his native Italy for his funeral. At the airport Camilli's AP colleagues gathered around the coffin for a short service which was attended by a priest and Camilli's parents Pierluigi Camilli and Maria Vigna. Camilli, a 35-year-old Italian, died when an unexploded missile believed to have been dropped in an Israeli airstrike blew up as Gaza police engineers worked to neutralise it in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya. He was on the scene reporting on the aftermath of the month-long war, hours before Israel and Hamas agreed to extend a temporary ceasefire for five days. A freelance Palestinian translator working with Camilli, Ali Shehda Abu Afash, 36, and four police engineers also died in the blast. Three other people, including AP photographer Hatem Moussa, were badly wounded. Israeli police are expanding their presence into East Jerusalem's Palestinian neighborhoods to extend a lull in attacks on Israelis by young residents that began last fall. “East Jerusalem is a high priority for us now, and our plan is intended to ensure the improvement of livelihoods both for Jews and Arabs,” police spokesperson Luba Samri said. She said police are actively recruiting Arab police officers and seeking to foster cooperation with local Arab community leaders to “enhance civilians’ feeling of safety and trust in the law enforcement system.” Be Smarter. Israeli forces have uprooted 47 Palestinian olive saplings in East Jerusalem al-Quds in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian sources say saplings which were planted in late March were chopped down and burned in Silwan neighborhood. They say the trees were to honor the 47 Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces in al-Quds since October. The agriculture industry, olive cultivation in particular, provides livelihood to about 80000 Palestinian families in the West Bank. Israeli forces and settlers regularly attack Palestinian villages and damage their property. Palestinians say Tel Aviv is seeking to drive them out in an attempt to Judaize the occupied West Bank. East Jerusalem represents the eastern half of Jerusalem and is viewed by Palestinians as the capital of Palestine. It became the focus of Palestinian settlement around the Old City of Jerusalem in the period after the Second World War and Israeli independence in 1948. Between the negotiations at Camp David and Taba, various options were explored to give the Palestinians more of a presence in East Jerusalem, which they claim as their capital. The peripheral villages and neighborhoods to the north and south of the city might have been ceded, although the Palestinians might receive less than full sovereignty over them - "functional autonomy," "administrative control" or "limited sovereignty." In Taba Israel considered ceding some parts of the core areas as well: some of the "Holy Basin" between the Old City and the Mount of Olives, downtown East Jerusalem, the Sheikh Jarrah Quarter, and in the Old City the Muslim and Christian Quarters. The Temple Mount/Haram issue remained unresolved, with Israel prepared to cede "functional sovereignty" (though not official) to the "upper" area of the mosques, while retaining sole sovereignty over the "lower" Western Wall.
