English/Nat Pope John Paul the Second's trip to the holy land of Israel came to an end on Sunday evening as the pontiff's plane took off from Ben Gurion airport outside Tel Aviv - after a ceremonial farewell from government leaders and religious heads. The Pontiff's visit to the Middle East has been viewed by most as a great success. The pope is flying first class, along with 11 other Vatican officials. Other members of his party of 46 are accommodated in business class. The pope makes a practice of flying on the national airline of his host country. He flew to Israel on Monday on a Royal Jordanian airliner from Amman. The pope spent Sunday morning in the Old City of Jerusalem, visiting Muslim and Jewish holy sites. Both sides tried to score political points from the visit, insisting that the pope was endorsing their claims by his presence. Israel considers all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the Arab section with the Old City, captured in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want to set up a state with part of Jerusalem as its capital. The Israeli claim accompanied the pope right up to the stairs to the plane - he walked the red carpet to the tune of 'Jerusalem of Gold' a song celebrating Israel's capture of east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war. The same tune welcomed the pope on his arrival. Since East Jerusalem fell under Israeli control in the Six Day War of 1967, a large number of Jewish neighbourhoods have also been settled. East Jerusalem is the location of the first campus of the Hebrew University [1] on Mt Scopus, Although the university area and the military base near it were always under Israeli control, even prior to 1967. Despite the high level of coexistence, the area remains a point of contention in Arab-Israeli relations, somewhat intensified since the outbreak of hostilities in the last few years. Between the negotiations at Camp David and Taba, various options were explored to give the Palestinians more of a presence in East Jerusalem, which they claim as their capital. The peripheral villages and neighborhoods to the north and south of the city might have been ceded, although the Palestinians might receive less than full sovereignty over them - "functional autonomy," "administrative control" or "limited sovereignty." In Taba Israel considered ceding some parts of the core areas as well: some of the "Holy Basin" between the Old City and the Mount of Olives, downtown East Jerusalem, the Sheikh Jarrah Quarter, and in the Old City the Muslim and Christian Quarters. The Temple Mount/Haram issue remained unresolved, with Israel prepared to cede "functional sovereignty" (though not official) to the "upper" area of the mosques, while retaining sole sovereignty over the "lower" Western Wall.

Tilt down from US flag to hotel entrance 13. Israeli security forces outside hotel 14. Tilt up from car to exterior of hotel STORYLINE US presidential contender Barack Obama arrived in Israel late Tuesday, facing a full schedule of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, after pledging to work for peace as soon as he takes office. In an airport statement, Obama condemned an attack a few hours earlier by a Palestinian tractor driver who ran amok on a Jerusalem street, smashing into a bus, overturning a car and seriously injuring an Israeli before being shot dead by a civilian and a police officer. "My last thought is to the families who suffered the terrible tragedy that we saw today. And it's just one more reminder why we have to work diligently, urgently and in a unified way to defeat terrorism," Obama told reporters at Ben Gurion airport. "I am absolutely committed to working with the Israeli government to make sure that these kinds of occurrences do not happen," he said. The attack took place near the historic King David Hotel, where Obama will be staying during his visit. The presumptive Democratic candidate has made time in his jampacked Mideast schedule for a 45-minute meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday at the Palestinian government headquarters in Ramallah, West Bank. The candidate's visit is generating some goodwill here, particularly since his Republican rival, John McCain, snubbed the Palestinians in a Mideast trip earlier in the summer. Abe Catsman, a McCain supporter in Jerusalem, who was present outside King David hotel late on Tuesday, said he wanted Obama to know that there were some in the area who were upset with the Democrat over "recent comments about Jerusalem." Obama in a speech to American Jewish leaders in June said that Jerusalem must remain Israel's undivided capital - even though no US government accepted Israel's 1967 annexation of east Jerusalem, the sector claimed by the Palestinians as their future capital. He later clarified that he believes the future of Jerusalem is to be determined in negotiations. The fate of the city is currently on the table in US-backed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. The body of AP video journalist Simone Camilli was transferred from St Joseph's hospital in east Jerusalem to Ben Gurion airport on Thursday to be flown back to his native Italy for his funeral. At the airport Camilli's AP colleagues gathered around the coffin for a short service which was attended by a priest and Camilli's parents Pierluigi Camilli and Maria Vigna. Camilli, a 35-year-old Italian, died when an unexploded missile believed to have been dropped in an Israeli airstrike blew up as Gaza police engineers worked to neutralise it in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya. He was on the scene reporting on the aftermath of the month-long war, hours before Israel and Hamas agreed to extend a temporary ceasefire for five days. A freelance Palestinian translator working with Camilli, Ali Shehda Abu Afash, 36, and four police engineers also died in the blast. Three other people, including AP photographer Hatem Moussa, were badly wounded. Made in 1962 by Castle Films, this travelogue of Jordan and Lebanon presents a vital, full color look at many of the Holy Land's most famous sights including the Garden of Gethsemane, the Dome of the Rock, and the Mountains of Lebanon. Roman ruins are seen at Baalbek, where majestic pillars still flank the temple of Jupiter. The film shows many traditional sights including farming with primitive tools and animals such as mules and camels, etc. Pipelines are shown carrying oil through Lebanon to the sea at Sidon. Modern Beirut is seen including its international airport and downtown with high rise apartments and other buildings, as well as minarets of mosques. The fabulous night life of Beirut is seen complete with bars serving alcohol, cafes, and all-night tourist attractions with belly dancing and cabarets. Baalbek is a town east of the Litani River in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, about 85 km (53 mi) northeast of Beirut and about 75 km (47 mi) north of Damascus. It has a population of approximately 82,608, mostly Shia Muslims. It is home to the annual Baalbeck International Festival. In Greek and Roman antiquity, it was known as Heliopolis. It still possesses some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Lebanon, including one of the largest temples of the empire. The gods that were worshipped there—Jupiter, Venus, and Bacchus—were equivalents of the indigenous deities Hadad, Atargatis, and another young male fertility god. Local influences are seen in the planning and layout of the temples, which vary from the classic Roman design. Israel is planning to build new settler units in the occupied West Bank. The units will be constructed near the Qalandiya Airport area, in East Jerusalem al-Quds. The settlement bloc will include 15000 units. All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. However, Tel Aviv is pressing ahead with its expansion projects despite international calls to stop them. More than half a million Israelis live in 230 illegal settlements built on occupied Palestinian territory. SOUNDBITE (English) Silvan Shalom, Israeli Foreign Minister "We think that the arrival of President Carter will contribute for the possibility to have open, fair and equal elections in the Palestinian Authority. We would like to do everything we can in order to help the Palestinians have their election. We are going to give them more freedom of movement, more let's say, free access to the polling booths. And we are going to give them all assistance that they might ask from us. I reassure President Carter that Israel will remove any obstacle that the Palestinians might face during the election time." 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Jimmy Carter, Former US President "I was here as the main observer in 1996, the last election they had. And it was very open and fair and peaceful. Also I hope that this one will be completely peaceful, both during and after the election process. And that demonstration of an ability to carry out their civil responsibilities during this election will be a demonstration also that there can be trustworthy negotiations in the future between the Israelis and the Palestinians to find some common ground on which an ultimate peace process can be concluded." 5. Carter and Shalom shaking hands Jerusalem 6. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon greeting former US President Jimmy Carter 7. Various, Ariel Sharon with Carter STORYLINE: Former US President Jimmy Carter arrived in Israel on Thursday as part of a delegation of the National Democratic Institute overseeing the Palestinian presidential elections on January 9. The 80-member multinational delegation is being co-led by Carter, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bidt and former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman. They will coordinate their efforts with the European team of observers who are already deployed in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. Carter met with Israeli Foreign minister Silvan Shalom at the airport and with Prime minister Ariel Sharon at the prime minister's office in Jerusalem. The presidential election is the first since 1996, when Arafat was chosen to head the Palestinian Authority. Arafat died in a French hospital on November 11. Interim Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) chief Mahmoud Abbas is the front-runner in the race. There are six other candidates, including Mustafa Barghouti, a democracy activist who is running a distant second behind Abbas. Jan 21, 2016 Xi Jinping addresses Arab League in Cairo before planned visit to Iran, announces millions in aid to Palestinians. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for establishing a Palestinian state within the pre-1967-war borders amid efforts by Beijing to assert its economic and political clout in the Middle East. Addressing the Cairo-based Arab League, Xi said the Palestinian problem “should not be marginalized.” “China supports the peaceful process in the Middle East [and] the establishment of a Palestinian state with its capital being eastern Jerusalem,” he added through an interpreter. Xi announced 50 million yuan ($7.6 million) in aid for the Palestinians. The United States, an ally of Jerusalem, has unsuccessfully attempted to break a long-standing stalemate in Palestinian-Israeli peacemaking.
